Bryant Passes Jordan for NBA scoring list.

Image
The Los Angeles Lakers star passed Michael Jordan for third on the NBA's career scoring list Sunday night in a 100-94 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Bryant entered the game needing nine points to pass the icon with whom he is often compared. He got the mark with two free throws with 5:24 to play in the second quarter. "I'm just honored to be here, man, to still be playing," Bryant said. "I appreciate being able to play this long. Careers normally don't last this long. I really appreciate the opportunity to still be out there playing and performing and doing what I do." Now only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone have scored more points than Bryant. "I congratulate Kobe on reaching this milestone," Jordan, the owner of the Charlotte Hornets, said in a statement released to The Associated Press. "He's obviously a great player, with a strong work ethic and has an equally strong passion for the game of basketball. I'v...

The Most Influential Scientist

Image
Alexander von Humboldt,  by  Joseph Stieler , 1843 Gaze at Alexander Von Humboldt’s 1814 self-portrait and you peer into the eyes of a man who sought to see and understand everything. By this point in his life, at age 45, Humboldt had tutored himself in every branch of science, spent more than five years on a 6,000 mile scientific trek through South America, pioneered new methods for the graphical display of information, set a world mountain climbing record that stood for 30 years and established himself as one of the world’s most famous scientists, having helped to define many of today’s natural sciences. Humboldt, born in Berlin, is sometimes called the last Renaissance man – he embodied all that was known about the world in his day. He spent the last three decades of his life writing Kosmos, an attempt to provide a scientific account of all aspects of nature. Though unfinished at the time of his death in 1859, the four completed volumes are one of the most a...

A New Theory Of The Universe’s Creation

Image
Representation of the timeline of the universe over 13.7 billion years, from the Big Bang, through the cosmic dark ages and formation of the first stars, to the expansion in the universe that followed. Credit: NASA/WMAP Science Team. This is what the physicists propose: The model they constructed has the three-dimensional universe floating as a membrane (or brane) in a “bulk universe” that has four dimensions. (Yes, this is making our heads hurt as well, so it might be easier to temporarily think of the brane as two-dimensional and the “bulk universe” as three-dimensional when trying to picture it.) You can read the more technical details in this 2000 paper on which the new theory is based. So if this “bulk universe” has four-dimensional stars, these stars could go through the same life cycles as the three-dimensional ones we are familiar with. The most massive ones would explode as supernovae, shed their skin and have the innermost parts collapse as a black hole. Th...

'Hagupit' now a super-typhoon: JTWC

Image
Graphic warning for tropical storm "Hagupit" by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center MANILA – The Hawaii-based Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) of the US Navy has categorized tropical cyclone ''Hagupit'' into a super typhoon. The JTWC, in an update issued at 5 a.m. Thursday (Manila time), said Hagupit was maintaining a ''west-northwestward trajectory under the steering influence of the subtropical ridge." This means that Hagupit was heading towards the Philippines as its upward movement was being blocked by the subtropical ridge, a large belt of high pressure in the northern hemisphere that is referred to as an anti-cyclone system. The JTWC said as of 2 a.m. Thursday, Hagupit was packing 1-minute sustained winds of 240 kilometers per hour (130 knots) and gusts of 296 kph (160 knots). The JTWC forecasts Hagupit to pack as much as 296 kph (160 knots) winds by December 7 (Sunday), 2 a.m., when it is nearer the Philippines. In the JT...

Maserati driver: Adriatico didn't ask for my license

Image
By David Dizon, ABS-CBNnews.com 'May video ka, may video ka!' - MMDA enforcer allegedly told driver MANILA - A Maserati driver who allegedly assaulted a traffic enforcer is lamenting the call of a lawmaker that he be meted a lifetime driving ban, saying he did not even commit a traffic violation during the incident. Speaking to ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda, businessman Joseph Russel Ingco said traffic constable Jorbe Adriatico did not ask for his license when he made a U-turn on Araneta Avenue. Instead, he said Adriatico flagged him down for an alleged traffic violation and then shoved his phone in his face to take a video. "Unang-una, hindi naman niya ako hiningan ng lisensiya. Idinuldul niya sa mukha ko yung video. Video agad ang sinasabi niya. Natural lang ang reaksyon ko hawiin. Talagang magagalit ka at hindi naman normal yun sa traffic enforcer na ganun ang gagawin sa iyo. Nasa mukha ko na po. Kung may violation ako, dapat ang sinabi 'A...

Gregg Popovich to Kawhi Leonard: 'You're the Big 1'

Image
Kawhi Anthony Leonard is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association. Leonard is listed as a small forward at 6 ft 7 in and 230 lb. Leonard has started the season building on his excellent play against Miami. He's averaging a career-high 15.1 points and 7.7 rebounds in 31.6 minutes per game, and he's had a few standout performances. Leonard made a few huge plays down the stretch against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday and finished the game with 26 points and 10 boards. That was the fourth time he topped 20 points on the year. It'd be unwise, however, to expect Leonard to put up those kind of numbers every night. Beyond the fact that there will be times where  Tim Duncan ,  Manu Ginobili  and  Tony Parker  are piling up points, it's not Leonard's or the Spurs' style to force anything. He'll make smart plays and he'll be aggressive, but it'd be surprising if...

NASA Announces Plans To Send Astronauts To Mars In Mid-2030s

Image
NASA ’s Orion spacecraft will  launch Thursday morning , performing an unmanned test flight for the machinery that will eventually bring humans to asteroids, before ultimately transporting them to Mars. While “eventually” has always been sort of a given, NASA has finally announced projected dates.                       During a press conference today on  NASA TV , it was announced that Orion will bring four astronauts at a time to asteroids between Earth and Mars by 2025, and the first humans will reach the red planet in the mid-2030s. This venture into deep space will be the farthest humans have gone since Apollo 17 went to the moon in 1972. (David Palinode and Jesse Williams have made a  fantastic website  that illustrates Earth’s relative distance from the Moon and from Mars. Spoiler: it’s a heck of a lot further than you’d think) With the first goal date only about 10 years away, the importance ...

Kobe Bryant Having The Most Prolific 19th Season In NBA History

Image
The Los Angeles Lakers are off to a horrid start this season. However, although Kobe Bryant hasn't quite been as efficient as he’s been in the past, he’s doing things in his 19th NBA season that simply haven’t been done before. Few players have made it to 19 seasons in the NBA, and even fewer have displayed a level of play that Kobe Bryant has. Four players come to mind when you combine longevity and greatness in the NBA: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, John Stockton, Karl Malone, and now Kobe Bryant. Kareem played 20 seasons, while Malone and Stockton played 19 seasons apiece. Kobe Bryant, of course, is currently 17 games into his 19th season. Certainly, one must factor in age when it comes to comparing Kobe with the aforementioned Hall-of-Famers, as each was 40 years old in their respective 19th seasons, and Kobe is “only” 36 in his. Another point that could be brought up is the fact that Kobe played all but six games in his 18th season, which would have some argue that Kobe’s 19th sea...

Sen. Jinggoy, Nangangambang Matulad kay Bong Revilla!

Image
